How do Sump Pumps work?
Water from drains usually installed around the home’s perimeter, or through soil migration is collected in a sump pit. The sump pump then pumps the water out of the pit and away from the building. Sump pumps keep basements and crawl spaces dry.

What is a sump pump battery backup and do I need one?
A battery backup is not necessary, however, it is highly recommended to have one, especially if you have or plan to finish your basement.
A sump pump battery backup provides a backup source of power in the event your sump pump fails. This failure could be due to a power outage, mechanical failure, or simply because the pump is at the end of its life. Think of the battery backup as an extra layer of protection against basement flooding.
What triggers a sump pump?
Sump pumps are triggered “on” by a float that is often attached to the pump. When water level in the pit reaches a level high enough to make the float rise to a predetermined level, the pump is switched “on”.
What is the best sump pump?
There are numerous sump pumps on the market today. One of the most common and reliable is manufactured by the Zoeller Company. The model M53 is a 1/3 horse power with an attached automatic float system. There are other models available and your plumbing professional can help you decide which is best for your application.
Sump pump maintenance?
Sump pumps should be maintained at least twice each year. We recommend prior to the spring rains and again in the fall before winter. The pump should be checked for proper operation and the pit should be cleaned of any debris that has accumulated.
